Already boasting innovative structures and iconic island systems off its shores, the United Arab Emirates is set to host another breakthrough and eco-efficient concept that could revolutionise energy production and capture in the future.
Ras al Khaimah, one of the states within the UAE, is set to deploy the first of what is hoped will be many floating solar islands that will produce entirely ‘green’ electricity and hydrogen.
The project, actually designed by Neuchatel’s Swiss Centre for Electronics and Microtechnology, will see a kilometre-wide array of solar panels placed out to sea, where it will capture enough sunlight to heat water to a temperature that produces hydrogen.
The solar island will then store the hydrogen gas for transportation back to the mainland, negating the avoidable need for an expensive network of gas pipeline.
