The long-awaited Pressure Equipment Regulations (PER) have been published, replacing the Vessels Under Pressure Regulations of the Occupational Health & Safety Act, 1993.
The new regulations were published in the Government Gazette, in July. They are modelled on the Pressure Equipment Directives (PED) used in Europe.
The Regulations apply to the design, manufacture, operation, repair, modification, maintenance, inspection and testing of pressure equipment with a design pressure equal to or greater than 50 kPa, in terms of the relevant health and safety standard incorporated into these Regulations under section 44 of the Act.
A further requirement is that all equipment designed and manufactured for use in South Africa shall be conformity assessed and subjected to the requirements set out in SANS 347. This standard was published last year but has recently been under review. The revision is expected to be published to coincide with the start date of the PER.
