Praxair starts up hydrogen plant for La Pampilla refinery in Peru

Praxair, Inc. has started up a new hydrogen (H2) plant at Repsol’s La Pampilla Refinery in the Callao district near Lima, Peru, reinforcing its leading market position in the South American country.

The industrial gas giant has brought its new 12 million standard cubic feet per day steam methane reformer (SMR) on stream, along with a new facility adjacent to the H2 plant that will recover and purify the carbon dioxide (CO2) generated by the SMR for the production of food-grade liquid CO2.

The SMR will use natural gas or naphtha as feedstock to generate H2 for the La Pampilla refinery, which produces gasoline, liquefied petroleum gas, jet fuel, kerosene, diesel and asphalts, among other products, to serve the local market.

“This new plant is a continuation of Praxair’s expansion strategy in Peru, where the company is already the market leader”

Toby Pimlott, Business Analyst

Domingos Bulus, President of Praxair South America, stated, “We are pleased to start up our latest H2 plant in South America, which is helping Refineria la Pampilla improve air quality and contribute to public health while also enhancing our liquid CO2 production infrastructure in Peru.”
