The Southern African Institute of Welding (SAIW) has had a red-letter year marked by its 60th anniversary celebrations, an international conference held in Johannesburg and the launch of its IIW-accredited certification scheme for South African welding fabricators.
A founder member of the International Institute of Welding (IIW), the latest highlight for the SAIW came at the institute’s 60th annual dinner, which also served to honour those who have made significant contributions to the institute and the industry as a whole.
At the dinner held in Johannesburg, the SAIW Gold Medal Award went to road and intermodal tank container manufacturer GRW Engineering of Worcester in the Western Cape in recognition of high levels of excellence achieved using advanced welding and cutting technology.
Other award recipients included Gert Joubert of ArcelorMittal South Africa and Angus Donaldson, both for life-long membership awards. Professor Madeleine du Toit of the University of Pretoria was awarded the Harvey Shacklock award for the best technical paper presented at an SAIW event, and James Cochrane was bestowed with the Phil Santilhano Memorial Award for best student.
