Salzgitter and Tenova took another concrete step towards climate-friendly steel production by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Hannover Messe 2019 for the realisation of SALCOS® (low carbon steelmaking).
SALCOS is a revolutionary concept designed by the two companies to significantly reduce CO2 in the production of steel. The aim is to gradually move away from carbon-intensive steel production based on blast furnaces, to a direct reduction and electric arc furnace route, with an increasing use of hydrogen.
According to Salzgitter, this concept is capable of reducing CO2 emissions by up to 95%. The two companies aim to jointly apply for public funding for the project.
