Scottish Carbon Capture & Storage (SCCS) has released a report welcoming the Scottish Government’s publication of its Climate Change Plan, setting out its specific policies and proposals for meeting Scotland’s climate change targets, and placing Scotland on a global leadership path.
The research group states that it is “pleased to see unequivocal recognition of the importance of carbon capture and storage (CCS) for reducing greenhouse gas emissions across Scotland.”
The plan underlines that CCS is the only way to decarbonise many industries and to provide low-cost, low-carbon heat rapidly. SCCS is fully committed to helping Scottish businesses seize opportunities for CCS use.
The report continues to emphasise that Scotland is uniquely well-placed to deliver CCS: It has the offshore geology that is needed to store carbon dioxide (CO₂) securely for thousands of years, and has the expertise from the oil and gas industry to be able to develop commercial stores – a new offshore industry. The region also has the offshore infrastructure – particularly gas pipelines – which can be repurposed cost-effectively to carry CO₂. In line with SCCS’s own proposals, the government recognises that the sustainable re-use of this infrastructure is part of a Just Transition, as are the opportunities to apply skills from the oil and gas sector to new markets.
