Severstal sets 2030 greenhouse gas reduction goal

Steel and mining giant, PAO Severstal, has laid out its medium-term goal to reduce the carbon intensity of its carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per tonne of steel.

The reduction is part of Severstal’s strategy to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, with its medium-term goal being calculated in accordance with the methodology established by the World Steel Association to reduce emissions by 10% by 31st December 2030, in comparison with the 2020 base year.

Achieving the goal will involve Severstal constructing a boiler house within boiler unit No. 11, the installation of a gas recovery compressor-free turbine (GUPT), a system for the recirculation of sinter gases from sinter machines, the replacement of coke with a hydrocarbon fuel, and a number of other measures.

Alexander Shevelev, CEO, Severstal, commented on the company’s goals, saying, “Severstal has set itself an ambitious goal to reduce its environmental impact and contribute to global efforts to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement.”
