Shell to use CANSOLV CO2 technology at Deer Park Energy Center

An energy centre in Texas, US, will adopt energy giant Shell Catalysts & Technologies (Shell) CANSOLV carbon dioxide (CO2) technology for post-combustion CO2 capture.

The Deer Park Energy Center, owned and operated by Calpine Texas CCUS Holdings (Calpine), will utilise the technology as part of Calpine’s front-end-engineering design (FEED) capture facility.

Set to capture 5m tonnes of CO2 per year from a natural gas combined cycle power plant at the energy centre, this will equate to around 95% of the plant’s total CO2 emissions.

Commenting on the project, Andy Gosse, President, Shell Catalysts & Technologies, said, “Shell’s CANSOLV CO2 Capture technology has been in operation since 2013, including in a large-scale, commercial, low-pressure application at SaskPower in Canada, where it is designed to capture up to 1 Mt/y (million tonnes per year) of CO2.”
