Steel giants Rio Tinto and Shougang to explore low-carbon solutions

Steel manufacturers Rio Tinto and Shougang Group have joined forces to explore the decarbonisation of steel production, an industry notorious for its carbon emissions.

Having signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the companies will aim to decarbonise steelmaking by focusing on efforts such as low-carbon sintering technology, blast furnace (BF) slag heat recovery and basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slag utilisation, and carbon capture and utilisation (CCU).

Building upon a nearly 30-year relationship, the partners will harness their shared experience in R&D, technologies, process, equipment, and logistics coordination to reduce carbon emissions across an industry responsible for around 7% of global CO2.

According to the World Steel Association, BF-BOF is used to produce around 70% of global steel, making it a key area of focus for carbon-reduction efforts.
