EIGA is the safety and technically oriented organisation representing the vast majority of European (and non-European) companies producing and distributing industrial, medical and food gases.
Its member companies’ products aim to save lives (oxygen has saved countless of Covid patients), make the industry at large safer (nitrogen inerts chemical processes), and contribute to a more sustainable future for Europe (use of hydrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide play important roles in achieving Europe’s climate ambitions).
The association was established in 1923. It started as the ‘Commission Permanente Internationale (CPI) de l’acétylène, de la soudure autogène et des industries qui s’y rattachent’ and was founded in Paris. After a merger in 1989 with EDIA, the ‘European Dry Ice Association’ of (CO2) producers, the association moved to Brussels in 1990 and changed its name to the European Industrial Gases Association (EIGA) in April 1991.
EIGA’s mission includes providing authorities and standardisation bodies with expert advice on the production, transport, storage and applications of industrial, medical and food gases, becoming more and more necessary in recent years. For example, medical oxygen was one of the main drugs used during the Covid-19 pandemic and the transition to hydrogen requires the industry’s expertise and competence.
