Performing effectively on hydrogen fuel cells, the Honda FCX vehicle has become the first car to meet the government requirements of the US Energy Policy Act and will net any potential buyers a $12,000 tax credit as a result.
Developed to meet the conditions outlined in the Act, the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle emits only water vapour and is good news for future customers, though the news is counterbalanced by the lack of availability. It may be a while before the car is developed to be widely available and there are currently only 15 of the vehicles used by the public in operation across California and New York.
Steve Ellis, Honda Motor America alternative fuels department manager, told the Los Angeles Times, $quot;They call them million-dollar cars, and that’s not so far-fetched. We figured if you’re going to do it, you might as well do it now.$quot;
Passed in 2005 as an attempt to encourage alternative energy solutions in the US, the Energy Policy Act stated that methods of energy conservation, including buying fuel-efficient cars, would be rewarded in the form of federal tax credits.
