As part of a new scheme to produce clean energy from waste, the UK Government today (12th January) announced its new Hydrogen BECCS Innovation Programme – a £5m scheme to produce hydrogen from biomass and waste.
The programme will also focus on the capture and storage of carbon released during the process using carbon capture technologies.
By using bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) technology, carbon dioxide (CO2) can be permanently removed from the atmosphere.
In addition to helping decarbonise the UK as part of the country’s ‘green industrial revolution’, the programme will help promote hydrogen as an alternative sustainable fuel for sectors such as transport and heavy industry.
