Following yesterday’s news of a memorandum of understanding between The Global Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Institute and China’s National Development and Reform Commission (DCC-NDRC), the UK has also highlighted keen interest in carbon capture and storage.
The UK proved its renewed interest yesterday, when ministers re-launched the country’s CCS competition. On 3rd April, Energy and Climate Secretary, Edward Davey, launched the competition design to support practical experience in the design, construction and operation of CCS.

In a press statement the Department confirmed, “The aim of the Programme is to enable private sector electricity companies to take investment decisions to build CCS equipped fossil-fuel power stations, in the 2020s, without Government capital subsidy and at an electricity market price that is competitive with other low carbon generation technologies.”
In tandem to the UK CCS Commercialisation Programme, the Department of Energy and Climate Change has also launched a ‘CCS Roadmap’. The plan sets out a strategic context for the Government’s interventions to support the development and deployment of cost competitive CCS, as well as the steps being taken to achieve this outcome.
