US President Joe Biden pledged $20bn in new domestic investments to reduce methane emissions at COP27 today and unveiled a new strategy to call out ‘super emitters’.
In a speech to COP27 delegates on Decarbonisation Day, he presented plans to strengthen proposed domestic methane standards in the oil and gas sector that would reduce wasted energy and harmful emissions from covered sources by 87% below 2005 levels.
A new ‘Super-Emitter Response Program’ would require operators to respond to credible third-party reports of high-volume methane leaks.
