‘Very large’ LCO2 carrier designed as response to CCUS growth

A partnership between two shipping giants will see development of a ‘very large’ liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2) carrier as a response to the increasing global focus on carbon capture and storage technologies.

The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. Ltd (DSME) will jointly develop designs for the 70,000 cubic metre LCO2 carrier.

As CCUS projects begin to develop globally, the need for carbon dioxide (CO2) transportation will inevitably increase. DSME predicts that existing LCO2 carriers, used for transport in the food industry, will not suffice for larger scale CO2 production and delivery.
