Wärtsilä and partners to develop ‘future-proofed’ modular LNG carrier concept

Technology group and maritime LNG pioneer Wärtsilä will collaborate with ABS and Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (HZS) to create the concept of a modular LNG carrier (LNGC) that will be able to adapt to future decarbonisation technologies.

The partnership will use simulations and modelling to ensure that the vessel meets the International Maritime Organisation (IMO)’s Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) up to at least 2050, in addition to helping reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions immediately through its electrified and integrated propulsion power solution.

Commenting on the evolving demands of the CII, Patrick Ryan, Senior Vice President, Global Engineering and Technology, ABS, said that vessels will need to be ready to adapt to improve their rating.

Continuing, he said, “ABS is a leader in the application of multi-physics modelling and simulation at sea, and we are excited about the potential of this technology to drive shipping’s decarbonisation ambitions and meet IMO 2050 objectives.”
