Technology group Wärtsilä will partner with Korean shipping giant Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) in a decarbonisation-focused effort to develop ammonia-fuelled vessels for future newbuild projects.
Having already tested an auxiliary engine running with a 70% ammonia fuel mix, Wärtsilä aims to have an engine concept capable of 100% ammonia by 2023.
Stating that ‘decarbonisation has become the industry’s goal’, Östen Lindell, Sales Director, Wärtsilä Marine Power, said, “We at Wärtsilä are committed to doing everything possible to achieve this ambition.”
“The adoption of a new generation of carbon-free fuels is central to a decarbonised future for shipping,” he added.
