What the distributors are saying: A 2022 overview and a 2023 outlook

Behind every successful independent industrial gas and welding distributor are other great distributors who provide the reliable supply of the vast range of goods and services required by industrial gas markets. These good and service providers, or equipment distributors, help gas distributors to run their day-to day business.

Equipment shortages, long lead times, price increases and shipping delays have presented challenges to the supply chain for a lot of US distributors over the past few years. This is the case when it comes to both the US gas distribution and equipment distribution space; the headwinds are often reflected across both aspects of the industrial gas market.

When it comes to gas distribution, 2022 has presented a number of shortages – from helium to carbon dioxide (CO2) – and the supply and demand balance will undoubtably be in question for months to come. On top of these headwinds, labor shortages have been an ongoing strain when it comes to getting the gas delivered to customers.

For equipment distributors, these headwinds have had a knock-on effect as gas distributors look to best utilise their portfolio of tanks, trucks and related equipment. Demands for industrial gases, such as oxygen and CO2, also drives business for equipment manufacturers as they strive to supply those who have to increase outputs.
