WHO sends 3,000 oxygen cylinders to Ethiopia amidst pandemic

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has delivered 500 of its promised 3,000 oxygen cylinders to the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) to support the strengthening of the country’s health facilities during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

The health crisis has seen developing nations suffer more than most and, with countries such as Ethiopia suffering from case-surge induced shortages, WHO hopes its donation will mitigate challenges threatening the country’s health system. 

Stating that Covid-19 continues to be a ‘major public health concern’ in Ethiopia, Dr Jane Maina, Officer in Charge, WHO Ethiopia Emergency Preparedness and Response programme, added, “It is imperative that we join hands with the government including through the provision of critical equipment and supply to support every aspect of pandemic response.” 

Acquired at a total cost of $1.1m, the 3,000 cylinders will also provide support for non-Covid related conditions that require oxygen supplementation.
